Blue Marine: Promote the Blue Economy in the Fishing Communities of the Great Lake of Tunis

The “Blue Marine” project aims to enhance the blue economy within the fishing communities surrounding the Great Lake of Tunis. Launched in July 2022 and set to run until September 2024, this initiative focused on promoting sustainable fishing practices, combating pollution, and fostering biodiversity conservation. By empowering local fishermen through training and awareness campaigns, the project seeks to improve their livelihoods while ensuring the ecological balance of the lake. Key activities include workshops on sustainable fishing, the establishment of “blue classes” in pilot schools, and the development of aquaculture projects managed by local fishermen.

This project is a dream project for several reasons. Firstly, it has made a significant impact by directly benefiting 192 fishermen and indirectly supporting over 450 families in the region. The innovative approach of integrating sustainable aquaculture with traditional fishing practices not only addresses the immediate environmental challenges but also creates sustainable business opportunities. The project’s potential for scalability is evident, as the methodologies and practices developed can be replicated in other coastal communities facing similar challenges. Moreover, the collaboration between local communities, governmental bodies, and NGOs fosters a sense of shared responsibility and commitment to preserving the ecosystem. Overall, the Blue Marine project exemplifies a holistic approach to environmental management, combining social, economic, and ecological benefits, making it a model for future initiatives.
