School roofs of the future
Roofs can play a vital role in solving urban challenges. They can provide space for biodiversity, rainwater storage, energy generation, and climate adaptation. They can also be a place for recreation and play, something cities often lack sufficient space for.
This project contributes to capitalizing on the opportunities offered by school roofs. A consortium consisting of Rooftop Revolution, the Schooldakrevolutie foundation, the IVN Nature Education Foundation, and De Provenier primary school in Rotterdam collaborated on a toolbox and educational module for creating sustainable roofs. The toolbox helps schools transform a standard school roof into a multifunctional one, offering both technical and financial support. The educational module introduces children aged 9 to 12 to the topic of sustainability and the value of green roofs. Children also get to work on designing their ideal school roof, contributing to climate awareness and inspiring both children and parents. In short, this project is an important first step towards more sustainable school roofs, climate-resilient schools and neighborhoods.
